Development
Announcement and Release
The Awesome Adventured of Captain Spirit was announced during the Microsoft Conference at E3 2018 as a complimentary cocky-contained spin-off game that functions as a precursor to the events of Life is Strange 2 on June 10, 2018 and released on June 26, 2018.
Concept and Idea
Co-Director Michel Koch on why they decided to make an additional game set in the Life is Strange universe:
"Because Life is Strange is not a single fix of characters or a single town. Information technology's not just Max and Chloe. For three years now, we've created lots of new characters working on Life is Foreign 2, and Helm Spirit is one of them. When nosotros started working on Life is Foreign ii, started talking about settings and characters, it was quite a huge story. We saw potential in a lot of characters, to notice a flake more about their backstory and their side stories."[6]
Captain Spirit is meant to work every bit both an introduction to the second season of Life is Strange and an entry point to the franchise and the kind of games the developers team works on. "I wouldn't say that [it is a demo]. It's formed around our relative experience. It's a standalone experience. It means that if y'all don't know Life is Strange, yous tin can play information technology and discover the type of game we're creating — and, I hope, the Dna of Life is Strange. Of course, if you know Life is Strange you lot can find a lot of details in Captain Spirit. It's really a perfect introduction to Life is Strange 2," Co-Manager Barbet explained in an interview.[10] Dontnod explained that they're hoping people who've never played Life is Strange will play The Crawly Adventures of Captain Spirit, and that it's designed for both newcomers and fans to go enjoyment out of.[11]
Chris was a character Dontnod came up with while working on Life is Foreign 2, but they wanted to practise something more in-depth with him.[12]
Themes
The game explores two primal aspects – the hard state of affairs of Chris's begetter and his family unit life and the positive side of how a 10-year-erstwhile spends his time lonely and escapes the reality of this situation. Dontnod wanted to combine the ii elements because they become hand in manus and, as Raoul Barbet puts it in an interview, "escaping doesn't make dark things disappear."[xiii]
The game is all about seeing the world through the eyes of a 10-year-one-time: "We really wanted to talk nearly existence a kid, and this sort of blending of imagination and reality and how, for the player, nosotros could use this vivid imagination to take fun, but also utilize it to tell Chris' story. What are his fears? What is the relationship with his dad similar? And so on."[6]
"Nosotros knew the game would be free, so it sort of changed the way we designed and wrote it," connected Koch. "We were completely free to create this pocket-sized sandbox of a kid on a Sabbatum morn. What do you lot want to do? Do you want to help your male parent out? Do you want to revel in your ain imagination?"[six]
The game was influenced by the writers' own experiences equally 10-year-olds who were only-childs and/or had but 1 parent similar the game's protagonist, and Scriptwriter Christian Divine'south experiences as a male parent to a niggling girl.[13]
Michel Koch (translated from French): "I was an only son, with a single parent. Forcibly in this case you find yourself more often alone, then you brand your earth your way of occupying your time. Although the game does not accept place in the 1990s, in that location are many concepts and memories of babyhood that come from there."[13]
Raoul Barbet on babyhood nostalgia: "Nosotros've all been children, boy or daughter, and we had our bedroom, our ain toys. (...) We hope that players will dearest Chris and be able to put their ain memories into this game, merely as they did with the first one."[14]
--
Raoul Barbet: "As a x-twelvemonth-former male child, you've got this powerful imagination nosotros all have as a boy, every bit a lonely male child. (...) We wanted to talk near that, the fact that sometimes it'southward interesting to be able to escape the difficult reality with your imagination."[12]
Underneath the cute conceit of Helm Spirit — that the powers he uses in-game are just a production of his imagination — lurks a more serious story. Chris' mother is out of the moving-picture show, and his dad struggles with alcohol abuse. "This is something we really wanted to talk near, what is it to exist a kid on your ain. I think it's interesting also to remember when yous're a boy like him, yous're quite young, but you start to understand some stuff of the adult world."[12]
Gameplay
Dontnod has worked to make dialog more natural. Players can now respond in some instances while moving. In the demo, this was on display as Chris' father, Charles, chosen to him from upstairs. Players can choose to reply or ignore all while continuing to explore. "We wanted to improve the feeling of answering someone," says Co-Artistic Director Raoul Barbet. "It was interesting to us to have the feeling for the role player to walk with someone near me and they can respond or not." Another change is the inclusion of a quest organization. Every bit Captain Spirit, Chris has a number of objectives to undertake, some of them are optional.[15]
Licensed Soundtrack
- "Death with Nobility" - Sufjan Stevens
- "Moon and Moon" - Bat For Lashes
- "Parade" - Rone
Similar for the original Life is Strange, the use of music was a key chemical element of the development. Co-Director Michel Koch explained in the developer'south diary on Captain Spirit, "Information technology'due south not just almost having some decent strikes in detail music, information technology'south besides how y'all're going to utilise it within the story."
